Separation of PRMMC into matrix alloy and reinforcements by nozzle filtering method

    Get PDF
The SiCP/Al?4 mass%Cu alloy composites fabricated by a low-pressure infiltration process (LPI process) were remelted and separated by nozzle filtering method. In the separation process, the PRMMC specimen was placed in a container with a small nozzle at the bottom. The molten PRMMC was forced to flow out through the nozzle by applying a certain pressure of Ar gas. Most of the molten matrix alloy flowed out through the nozzle and the remainder in the container consisted of SiC particles and a part of the matrix alloy. The particle volume fraction of the remainder was higher than that of the original PRMMC and the remainder would work as a filter to separate SiC particles from the matrix alloy melt. When nozzle tip angle was ranged from 60° to 120°, about 80% of matrix alloy in the PRMMC was separated and few SiC particles were observed in the separated matrix alloy. The surface of recovered SiC particles became slightly roughened due to the reaction with the molten matrix during the separation process. However, this is not expected to affect their reuse

Effect of Alumina Fibers on Fabrication Process and Characteristics of Alumina Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Alloy Composites

    Get PDF
In order to develop the alumina fiber reinforcements optimized to FRMMCs, the effect of characteristics of alumina fibers on the fabrication process and the characteristics of the alumina fiber reinforced Al alloy composites was investigated. Alumina fibers which have different alumina content were prepared. Alumina content in the fibers was varied from 80% to 100%. Al-4mass%Cu alloy, Al-12mass%Si alloy and Al-10masss%Mg alloy were used as matrix. The FRMMC specimens were fabricated by a low-pressure infiltration process (LPI process). The formability of the preform was improved with increasing alumina content in the fibers. However, broken fibers were observed in the preform when alumina fibers with high alumina content were used. The number of the broken fibers seemed to be increased with increasing alumina content in the fibers. This result could be attributable to a change of fiber strength resulting from a change of alumina content in the fiber. The FRMMC specimens were characterized by using Vickers hardness test. The Vickers hardness of FRMMC specimens depended on the elasticity or the hardness of the fibers. The results obtained suggest that the characteristics of the FRMMCs largely depend on the intrinsic characteristics of the reinforcement fibers.6th International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials - THERMEC\u272009; Berlin; 25 August 2009 through 29 August 2009; Code 7924

Complex and Transitive Synchronization in a Frustrated System of Calling Frogs

    Get PDF
This letter reports synchronization phenomena and mathematical modeling on a frustrated system of living beings, or Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica). While an isolated male Japanese tree frog calls nearly periodically, he can hear sounds including calls of other males. Therefore, the spontaneous calling behavior of interacting males can be understood as a system of coupled oscillators. We construct a simple but biologically reasonable model based on the experimental results of two frogs, extend the model to a system of three frogs, and theoretically predict the occurrence of rich synchronization phenomena, such as triphase synchronization and 1:2 antiphase synchronization. In addition, we experimentally verify the theoretical prediction by ethological experiments on the calling behavior of three frogs and time series analysis on recorded sound data. Note that the calling behavior of three male Japanese tree frogs is frustrated because almost perfect antiphase synchronization is robustly observed in a system of two male frogs. Thus, nonlinear dynamics of the three-frogs system should be far from trivial

    Electrodeposition of Ferromagnetic Metal Nanowires

Ni-Fe alloy films and nanowires were fabricated using electrodeposition technique. The cylindrical shape of nanowires was precisely transferred from the nanochannels of membrane filters and the aspect ratio reached to around 60. Coercive force in in-plan direction of Ni-Fe alloy films decreased to ca. 1 Oe with increasing Fe content in deposits while, in perpendicular direction, the films were hardly magnetized. Magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the nanowires were spontaneously magnetized to the long axis direction and the coercive force reached to ca. 200 Oe.6th International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials - THERMEC\u272009; Berlin; 25 August 2009 through 29 August 2009; Code 7924

    Electrodeposition of Zinc-Telluride Compound Semiconductors

Zinc-telluride compound semiconductors were electrodeposited from acidic aqueous solution. Under potential deposition (UPD) of zinc was observed during the co-deposition of zinc and tellurium. UPD of zinc was promoted by rising the solution temperature up to 353K. Band gap energy of annealed zinc-telluride films with almost ideal stoichiometric composition (Zn:Te=1:1) were close to 2.26 eV.Nagasaki Symposium on Nano-Dynamics 2008 (NSND2008) 平成20年1月29日(火)於長崎大学 Poster Presentatio

Nano-crystalline nickel-molybdenum alloys were electrochemically synthesized from aqueous solution. With increasing molybdenum content in the alloy up to 23.6%, the crystal grain size decreased down to several nanometers scale. The magnetic coercive force decreased to several oersteds with increasing the molybdenum content. Soft magnetic property of the alloy was improved compared with that of pure nickel.Nagasaki Symposium on Nano-Dynamics 2008 (NSND2008) 平成20年1月29日(火)於長崎大学 Poster Presentatio

Clinical Usefulness of the VS Classification System Using Magnifying Endoscopy with Blue Laser Imaging for Early Gastric Cancer

    Get PDF
Background. Blue laser imaging (BLI) enables the acquisition of more information from tumors’ surfaces compared with white light imaging. Few reports confirm the validity of magnifying endoscopy (ME) with BLI (ME-BLI) for early gastric cancer (EGC). We aimed to assess the detailed endoscopic findings from EGCs using ME-BLI. Methods. We enrolled 386 consecutive patients with 417 EGCs that were diagnosed using ME-BLI and resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection. Using the VS classification system, three highly experienced endoscopists (HEEs) and three less experienced endoscopists (LEEs) evaluated the demarcation line (DL), microsurface pattern (MSP), and microvascular pattern (MVP) within the endoscopic images of EGCs obtained using ME-BLI, assigning high-confidence (HC) or low-confidence (LC) levels. We investigated the clinicopathological features associated with each confidence level. Results. The HEEs’ evaluations determined the presence of DL in 99%, irregular MSP in 96%, and irregular MVP in 96%, and the LEEs’ evaluations determined the presence of DL in 98%, irregular MSP in 95%, and irregular MVP in 95% of the EGCs. When DL was present, HC levels in the Helicobacter pylori- (H. pylori-) eradicated group and noneradicated group were evident in 65% and 89%, a difference that was significant (p<0.001). Conclusions. In the diagnosis of EGC with ME-BLI, the VS classification system with ME-NBI can be applied, but identifying the DL after H. pylori was difficult

A Human-Computer Duet System for Music Performance

Virtual musicians have become a remarkable phenomenon in the contemporary multimedia arts. However, most of the virtual musicians nowadays have not been endowed with abilities to create their own behaviors, or to perform music with human musicians. In this paper, we firstly create a virtual violinist, who can collaborate with a human pianist to perform chamber music automatically without any intervention. The system incorporates the techniques from various fields, including real-time music tracking, pose estimation, and body movement generation. In our system, the virtual musician's behavior is generated based on the given music audio alone, and such a system results in a low-cost, efficient and scalable way to produce human and virtual musicians' co-performance. The proposed system has been validated in public concerts. Objective quality assessment approaches and possible ways to systematically improve the system are also discussed
